Blog Post: WordPress Import/Export Problems?

Red Deer & Blackfalds Web Design Writes:

If you’re a Small Business Website Developer and you find yourself building a website on an alternate domain in an effort to keep your existing development online as long as possible, then eventually you will be looking to transfer your new project to your existing domain. First things first, make sure you read my article on performing an Easy WordPress Transfer.

But! What happens when that doesn’t work? Perhaps it’s saying that your file size is too large, or that you’ve experienced a timeout problem…?

Editing your php.ini file can be tricky (even for a seasoned developer), and chances are the size of your new development has limited your ability to simply import/export your .xml file with all the necessary media. So the next steps are as follows:

  1. Download This Plugin – thankfully you can utilize this plugin to save you from accessing your server via FTP and making the necessary edits.
  2. Insert New Code – after downloading and installing your plugin, insert the necessary lines of code on your WP installation … code seen a the bottom
  3. Give It 5… – wait a few minutes and then try the import of your .xml file again!

There is a chance that based on the type of hosting you’re using that the problem can run deeper than this solution; however, give this a try and if you still run into problems don’t hesitate to Contact Me!
