When developing a Small Business Website, in a number of instances there will be an existing website already on the server that needs to be revamped. During the development process it is common practice to develop on a sub-domain, or on a test-domain in order to not interrupt any traffic on the existing website. During this time there a few key things to keep in mind:
- Disengage Search Traffic – under Settings > Reading on a WordPress install, you will find an option for “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”. It is a good option to check this box so that any duplicate information between the test-domain and the existing older site doesn’t affect the search engine optimization of the business.
- Use Uber – Uber Login Logo adds that extra bit of customization to a test-domain when you are showing a client their developing product.
- Password Protect – another quick and easy way to secure your test domain from unwanted traffic is to use Password Protect and provide only the client with credentials to view the site as it’s being built.
- Other Security Plugins – a common staple in most WordPress developments is Limit Login Attempts, as well as a variety of other plugins that can be transferred efficiently to your actual domain after developing is done.
